London is a booming city for social enterprise with approximately 70,000 social enterprises in the UK contributing £18.5 billion to the United Kingdom’s economy. With that in mind on a windy day, my co-founder, Jarkko and I took out to the streets to conduct a social experiment. We wanted to find out if people knew about the term ‘social enterprise’
We spoke to 20 people and asked them 3 questions each, and these were some of the responses we received;
Question 1: Do you know what a social enterprise is?
Answer 1: Errmm…. (looks behind) actually no
Answer 2: No (laugh)
Answer 3: I don’t know what a social enterprise is
Answer 4: I think so, but I am not sure
Answer 5: No!
Answer 6: Noo
Question 2: What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word social enterprise?
Answer 1: Social enterprise? (shakes head) nothing in particular actually
Answer 2: I guess social networking, that kinda thing
Answer 3: Can you try to tell me in other words?
Answer 4: I am not sure!
Answer 5: Ermm…. sounds like something that you would….. something to do with looking after people.
After explaining what a social enterprise is, we asked them one more question.
Question 3: You have two similar products with the same price and quality, but one of them creates positive impact. Which product would you choose?
Answer 1: Price and the quality of the product is still more important to me but I will take it as an additional value.
Answer 2: I want to say the cheaper one but I wouldn’t really know :/
Answer 3: The one that benefits those who don’t have water.
Answer 4: Yeah obviously the one that is helping other countries out.
Answer 5: The one that did good and gave the money.
In conclusion to this social experiment that we did, no one knew what a social enterprise is even though a few managed to guess it. That did give me a bit of reassurance that the planet could be saved and just needs more awareness.
When we asked the final question, it felt great to hear that people care and would choose the product that contributes to creating positive impact. Now, the only thing that’s missing out is a large boost to create awareness around social enterprise.
I think the future of business is social enterprise and the only way to conduct business. If you agree please share this along to increase awareness for Social Enterprise.
